About

Location: The Gambia
Key(s): Maternal & Reproductive Health

Bwiam General Hospital is a major rural healthcare facility located in the Foni Kansala District of The Gambia. Serving as a government-funded tertiary referral center, it supports a population of 68,000 and provides services to over 120,000 residents in the surrounding district. Annually, the hospital manages the healthcare needs of approximately 30,000+ patients, positioning itself as a crucial component of the region's healthcare infrastructure.

The hospital's primary objectives are centered around enhancing community health outcomes, reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates, and offering comprehensive care to individuals. Its services span emergency care, primary healthcare, specialized treatments, and preventative and educational programs. These efforts are critical in addressing the health challenges faced by the community, including high levels of maternal and neonatal mortality and the impact of economic hardships on access to healthcare.

Power Up Gambia, established in 2009 by a University of Pennsylvania undergraduate, focuses on providing reliable and sustainable solar energy systems for healthcare facilities across The Gambia. This partnership has enabled Bwiam General Hospital to improve its infrastructure and expand the medical services it provides, contributing significantly to the hospital's mission of promoting the well-being of the community through accessible, quality healthcare.

The Gambia experiences some of the highest maternal mortality rates in Africa, with disorganized healthcare and delayed emergency responses identified as key factors. Bwiam General Hospital aims to mitigate these challenges through strategic improvements in healthcare delivery and infrastructure. Additionally, the hospital is involved in projects to renovate rural outposts like Sanghajor and Kappa, which are essential for extending healthcare services to remote communities. These renovations focus on structural repairs, utility installations, and the integration of solar power to ensure reliable energy access.

In collaboration with Rockflower, Bwiam General Hospital is dedicated to making significant advancements in healthcare access and quality within The Gambia through the establishment of rural outposts. This partnership will support the hospital's efforts in infrastructure enhancement, professional development for healthcare workers, and the adoption of sustainable practices. The goal is to create a more efficient and effective healthcare system that can better serve the needs of the community, particularly in reducing the rates of maternal and neonatal mortality.
