Key(s): Maternal and Reproductive Health

Bwiam General Hospital, situated in the Foni Kansala District of The Gambia, plays a pivotal role in providing healthcare to over 120,000 residents in and around its district. As a government-funded tertiary referral center, it faces the monumental task of delivering comprehensive healthcare services, including emergency, primary, and specialized care, to a population significantly affected by high maternal and neonatal mortality rates and economic challenges.

The Gambia, which faces high levels of maternal and neonatal mortality, illustrates a pressing need for improved healthcare infrastructure, especially in rural areas. Rural outposts, critical in extending healthcare services to remote communities, are in dire need of renovation to effectively serve their communities. Sanghajor and Kappa, two such outposts, are currently unable to provide adequate healthcare due to structural damages, lack of essential utilities, and insufficient medical equipment. These deficiencies not only hinder the provision of care but also exacerbate the health risks faced by pregnant women, lactating mothers, and schoolchildren in these areas.

The 'Renovations of Rural Outposts for Bwiam General Hospital' project, in partnership with Rockflower, aims to address these challenges by renovating and equipping Sanghajor and Kappa outposts. The project encompasses:

  1. Structural Repairs: Both outposts will undergo essential structural repairs to address damages to doors, windows, ceilings, and roofs. This includes replacing damaged components and ensuring the buildings are secure and weatherproof.

  2. Utility Installation: The project will focus on installing necessary utilities, including water supply, electricity, and sanitation facilities. This effort includes connecting the outposts to the local water and electrical grid and installing two sink basins in each outpost for hygiene purposes.

  3. Solar Power Integration: In collaboration with Power Up Gambia, the project will equip both outposts with solar panels to guarantee a reliable power supply. This initiative is crucial for maintaining cold chain storage for medications, operating medical equipment, and providing lighting.

  4. Furnishings and Equipment: Post-renovation, both outposts will be furnished with essential medical and office furniture. This includes outfitting the delivery rooms with modern beds and equipment to ensure safe childbirth procedures.

  5. Perimeter Security: To protect the premises and maintain hygiene, perimeter fencing will be erected around both outposts. This measure will prevent animals from entering the facilities and ensure a clean and safe environment for patients and healthcare workers.

  6. Patient Waiting Areas: To accommodate patients during peak times and in adverse weather conditions, waiting sheds will be constructed. These areas will provide shelter for patients awaiting treatment.

The renovation of Sanghajor and Kappa rural outposts is expected to significantly improve the delivery of healthcare services to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children in the Foni Kansala District. By upgrading these facilities, the project aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates, enhance access to quality healthcare, and ensure a safer and more welcoming environment for both patients and healthcare providers.

In partnership with Rockflower, Bwiam General Hospital, and Power Up Gambia, this project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing the urgent healthcare needs of The Gambia's rural communities.
