A Second Bakery for the Women of UWADS

Location: Bududa, Uganda

Rockflower is continuing their support of Uganda Women Advocacy and Development Services (UWADS), as they undertake a new project to economically empower the women of the district of Bududa. In this project, young women will obtain practical and marketable skills training through the creation of a local bakery. These women will have the opportunity to participate in the social and economic development of their community while learning the skills necessary to start their own small businesses and gain economic independence.

Background

In 2009, Uganda Women Advocacy and Development Services (UWADS), was founded to address the unequal opportunities in property ownership, education, employment and leadership faced by women. UWADS works to address economic disparities, empower women with business education, and improve the voices and choices of women.

Since 2016, Rockflower has supported UWADS in their mission to construct a local bakery in the district of Mbale and provide women the skills necessary to bake and establish their own small businesses. The project proved to be a success. The women were able to learn useful skills, create their own small businesses and even moved forward to create small savings programs in their communities. Now the women of Mbale are even taking the initiative to begin training women in the neighboring district of Bududa to implement this model.

For this new project, Rockflower will be supporting UWADS in the construction and implementation of a bakery and training program for women in Bududa. UWADS has determined that there are currently no other bakeries in the district. Since all baked goods are currently being imported from other districts, the demand for local products is expected to be high and the potential for the women's success in this endeavor is extremely promising. The project will provide a source of income and independence for this group of women which includes single mothers, many of whom are still children, girls who have left school, and women and girls who have escaped abusive situations.
