New Elementary Early Childhood Education (New Elementary) is an NGO based in Namibia with the mission of improving the quality and raising the standard of Early Childhood Education in vulnerable communities. They do this by creating stimulating and safe learning environments that support the cognitive development of children. Research has shown that high-quality early care and education is a crucial component of a child’s holistic development. This becomes particularly important in settings where children are exposed to the adverse childhood experiences commonly associated with living in poverty.

New Elementary was established to holistically reform early childhood education in vulnerable communities and informal settlements by improving the infrastructure of school buildings,  providing development opportunities to educators and supplying quality educational resources and materials. They do this by first identifying existing schools that are in such poor structural condition that they pose health or safety risks and therefore impede on the children’s education.

The organization then partners with the school and begins by streamlining their curriculum in line with national standards and research on childhood cognitive development. They work to provide additional resources and education to the teachers, offering opportunities to improve and develop their skill set. Finally, New Elementary physically restores the school building, and creates a safe environment that is conducive to learning. The result is a restored school that has not only improved facilities, but more equipped educators and higher quality learning materials so that the students have access to the quality education that all children deserve.
