About

Location: Wakiso, Uganda
Key(s): Economic Empowerment

Youth and Women Initiative for Sustainable Development (YWISD) was founded in 2016 by 5 young, unemployed women graduates, who grew up seeing their mothers rights being violated by men when it comes to selling of their crop harvest. Their mothers are the women who do the majority of the work, including planting, weeding and harvesting of crops. But when it comes to selling the harvest, the men take advantage. They sell the crops and take the money for their own, leaving the women with all of the household obligations to meet the basic needs of their children without resources.

YWSID was founded with the purpose of increasing women’s participation in productive roles, reducing the increasing number of unemployed youth, bridging the gap of gender and economic inequalities, and reducing school dropouts, among other pressing community challenges of youth and women in Uganda, in particular Wakiso.

Mission: To promote a well mobilized, pro-active, empower and poverty free society with women and youth in productive roles.

Vision: To have women and youth who are inclusively, practically involved in sustainable development and improve their livelihoods.
