Revitalizing Mountain Kindergarten

Location(s): Namibia

Key(s): Education

New Elementary Early Childhood Education (New Elementary) is an NGO based in Namibia with the mission of improving the quality and raising the standard of Early Childhood Education in vulnerable communities. They do this by creating stimulating and safe learning environments that support the cognitive development of children. Rockflower has partnered with New Elementary to support the revitalization of Mountain Kindergarten, a preparatory school located in Goreangab, in the Hadino Hishongwa district of the Samora Machel Constituency in Katutura, Windhoek – amongst the city’s most impoverished settlements. The school operates as both a daycare and pre-primary school for children ages 6 months to 3 years old.

For this project, New Elementary will work with the school staff to improve the physical structure of the building, enhance the learning environment and curriculum, and provide training and capacity building opportunities to the teachers. One of the major issues for the school is their leaking roof, which has ruined a good deal of their learning materials and made it difficult for teachers to keep supplies in the building. Additionally, the school is poorly insulated and the corrugated iron exterior makes the school very hot in the summers and cold in the winters. Additionally, the schoolyard has no fence or playground which makes it difficult to take the children outside to play. Revitalizing the school will lead to increased enrollment, and therefore higher salaries for the teachers at the school.

The team at New Elementary looks forward to completely revitalizing this school, making it a safe space for children that is conducive to their learning and development. They are also excited to provide the teachers, who up until this point, have made the best of the existing circumstances, with new facilities, materials and opportunities to learn.
